I was born and raised in a sleepy harbourtown beside Lake Ontario. Hungarian and Scottish ancestry.
I am very grateful for the close mentorship of Suzie Leblanc over many years. I started my studies in music therapy and then completed a master’s in early music voice at McGill with Dominique Labelle.
I mostly freelance as an early music singer. I also compose and play guitar, sometimes taking the stage as a singer songwriter or for cross-genre projects. I teach voice and guitar on the side, and do a bit of graphic design and web development.
The beauty and mystery intrigue me. The written music is like an ancient secret code that is a map to the soul of a totally different era, world, distant ancestor. We can breathe life into it in this way that evades time. It’s magical.
Beauty in tiny details.
I love to draw and write and cook. My houseplants are my children.
Len Torrie is a preeminent soprano, songwriter, and performance curator living in Montréal. Known for their crystalline tone, versatility, and storytelling gifts, Len is sought after by various ensembles in Montréal and across Canada. Mentored by Suzie LeBlanc and Dominique Labelle, Len earned a master’s degree in early music vocal performance from McGill University in 2022. This was followed by a standout tenure as inaugural Emerging Artist for Early Music Vancouver’s Bach Festival. They returned the following year to sing the role of St. Catherine in the festival’s project Milton in Love alongside soprano Myriam Leblanc. Len is featured on Leblanc's album with Ensemble Mirabilia Amour Fou released in 2024. As a singer-songwriter, they delight in sharing their emotionally resonant, folk-inspired compositions with intimate audiences, occasionally blending the worlds of folk, baroque, renaissance and medieval music in innovative creative projects. Len’s previous studies in music therapy positioned healing and connection as the focal points of their performance life. Len is currently exploring the practice of self-accompanying early music on baroque guitar. As a queer non-binary artist, Len is guided by the knowledge of their queer elders and ancestors in the research and performance of radically inclusive stories as they continue to develop musical languages to explore that which is most richly human.
